Building & Grounds Committee

The Building Committee meets several times a year to oversee the maintenance of our buildings and grounds. This committee also reports to the Parish Finance Council and the Parish Pastoral Council to provide insight and guidance for planning and budgeting purposes.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE

Meeting Minutes for April 6, 2006

Members present:   Jim Daniel, Herb Tauchen.

Members excused:   Randy Lorge, Kyle Alexander.

Parish staff present:   Penny Demerath, Parish Business Administrator, and Don Placzkowski, Head Custodian.

Guests present:   David Berndt, Barb Berndt, Duane Hille.

New member:   Randy Bontjes

The meeting began at 6:50 p.m. by welcoming Randy Bontjes, a new member, to the meeting.

The meeting continued with David Berndt distributing a sketch of the anticipated landscaping for the east side of the Center.   David proposes small washed stone from the building extending about three feet and then wood chips matching the church landscaping extending another 2-3 feet.   The committee and guests went to the site of the proposed landscaping to view the area and look at the grade of the lawn.   It was suggested that the downspout on the north side of the new Center steps be buried into drain tile angling toward the tree.   The landscaping was also altered on the south side of the steps.   The committee suggested that the edging stone extend from the corner of the building directly out to the sidewalk.   The meeting then reconvened in the lower level of the Center.   David stated that he has been speaking with Shawano Lawn and Stone regarding the landscaping.   He had a price of approximately $60 for the stone and $90 for the fabric.   Dave will talk to Larry Sperberg about a price on the washed stone.   It was suggested that the edging stone match the stone used for the playground retaining wall, if possible, which was purchased from Zoll Stone.   David will obtain pricing for the chips, edging stone, and possible top soil/sod that may be needed on the south side of the steps.   Penny will discuss the plan with Father Len and the absent committee members and try to get a consensus on the plan by Wednesday of next week.   If this occurs, David will then be able to get the pricing information to the committee for the April 20 th meeting so that formal approval can be obtained and the project can move forward.   Our guests left at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Don explained the various school gym floor bids to the committee and showed samples of the various floors.   The following items were mentioned:

  • The floor tile does have asbestos so if it is removed, abatement would be required.   The cost of the abatement is NOT included in the bids.
  • It is also possible that the floor could be encapsulated; however, this does not discontinue the semi-annual paperwork required because of the asbestos.
  • The 2nd bid listed (Pioneer Wood Floors for $42,500) is the same product as Basement Bros. of Germantown’s bid.   This product would add approximately three inches of floor to the existing floor, encapsulating the asbestos tile, but requiring that the stage be “notched out” so that the racks of chairs that are stored under the stage would still fit.   All doorways would also need to be ramped up to the new floor.
  • The 7 th bid (VHC Athletcis SportGrain Plus in Maple for $54,681) is a product which uses hot weld seams to make the floor look like it is one piece.   This product would be used on the court area only.   A red, more heavy-duty, product would be used under the bleachers.
  • The 8 th bid (VHC Athletcis SportCourt ResponseMaple for $34,363) consists of tile squares that are interconnected.   Jim Daniel mentioned that he has this product in the playroom of his business and it has lasted for years without any wear.   There would be a small pad that would be placed under the tile.
  • Funding for this project has been donated to the school.

Don mentioned that the donor also sponsored a stage curtain, which would cost approximately $4,000, and new bleachers, at a cost of approximately $12,000-$18,000.   The bleachers would be freestanding and moveable so that they could be used in various ways, such as being moved in a semi-circle for concerts and plays.   The current bleachers would need extensive repairs to the mechanics if they are to continue to be used since the wheels are putting grooves in the current flooring.   Also if new bleachers are purchased and they are moveable, the wall behind the current bleachers would need to be painted.

The committee had several questions regarding the cost of abatement, bleachers, ramping, painting behind the current bleachers, cost of repair the current bleachers, and the location of installed flooring that has been bid so that the committee may have the opportunity to view the flooring individually.   Penny will contact Lois for the requested information.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 20 th, at the Center upper level at 6:45 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Penny Demerath

Parish Business Administrator
