Building & Grounds Committee

The Building Committee meets several times a year to oversee the maintenance of our buildings and grounds. This committee also reports to the Parish Finance Council and the Parish Pastoral Council to provide insight and guidance for planning and budgeting purposes.

Minutes of the

BUILDINGS & GROUNDS MEETING

Held August 17, 2006

Present: Randy Lorge, Jim Daniel, Penny Demerath (Parish Business Administrator), and Don Placzkowski (Head Custodian).

Absent:   Kyle Alexander and Herb Tauchen.

The meeting was called to order at 6:50pm in the new west conference room, main level, of the Center.

The purchase and installation of a water softener to affect the baptismal font and RP valve were discussed.   The font heater is malfunctioning; it is believed that the element needs to be replaced again.   It was replaced only eleven months ago.   It was felt that the hard water may be causing the element to burn out more quickly.   Randy Lorge will take a water sample to determine the hardness of the water and the appropriate softener needed and report his findings at the next meeting.

It was stated that the Center basement flooring and basement has been installed along with the carpeting in the SE Center conference room.   The school classroom (kindergarten) carpet has been installed and Floors Unlimited will be coming to re-glue the downstairs corner classroom (formerly 2 nd grade).

It was stated that the boiler repair will be more extensive than originally anticipated.   Another section of the boiler needs to be replaced because of a crack noticed during pressure testing of the new part.   The part is on order and the boiler will be repaired as soon as the part is available.   We are hopeful that a portion of these costs will be under warranty.

Jim mentioned that it might be a good idea for us to look into painting a yellow stripe on the top and front of all entrances to church to alert parishioners and visitors to the entrance steps.

Inquiry was made as to the sinkholes appearing in the parking lot near the island.   Members were assured that Larry Sperberg is monitoring these sinkholes, filling them as needed, and will patch the blacktop when settling is complete.

Jim mentioned that his brother-in-law would like to donate two benches to be placed around the gathering space entrance.   This will need to be discussed with Father Len.

Don mentioned that the grass on either side of the carport entrance is difficult to maintain.   He also mentioned that the shrubs on either side of the coach’s door and the grass in this area are hard to maintain because of high traffic by school children during the school year and basketball players during the summer.   It was suggested that the committee give these areas some thought to determine the best course of action in order to maintain a pleasant exterior appearance to the grounds.

The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 21, 2006, at 6:45 pm in the West Center Conference Room, Main Level (Mary Ellen’s former office).

Respectfully submitted,

Penny Demerath

Parish Business Administrator
