BUILDING & GROUNDS COMMITTEE
Parish Center

Minutes of December 15, 2005, Meeting

Members Present: Herb Tauchen, Tim Roe, Jim Daniel, Kyle Alexander

Business Administrator: Penny Demerath

Parish Custodian: Donald Placzkowski

Meeting convened at 6:49pm.

A walk through of Parish Buildings was conducted lead by Donald Placzkowski to identify maintenance needs.

The following list of items needing maintenance was developed:

Church-

Paint is peeling from a small area on the south wall of the church sanctuary and also cracks are developing in the paint in this same area.

Paint is cracking and peeling in the southwest and northwest stairways to the church basement as well as the walls of the southwest bathroom in the church basement. Need to determine best method to fix these areas. Also have paint peeling along the south basement wall in the southwest corner of the church basement.

The regulator pressure (RP) valve in the basement, which controls water flow to the baptismal font, will need to be replaced due to internal wear from hard water.

The circulating pump for the gym air circulation system is slowly wearing out and may need to be replaced next fiscal year. Plan to continue to use it until it terminates.

The risers and treads for the 5 middle steps in the stairway to the church basement at the northeast church entrance need to be replaced.

Sacred Heart School-

Two large windows next to the door at the north school entrance have condensation developing in between the glass panes and should be replaced. Also the 3 windows around the door at the southeast entrance to the school have a similar problem and should be replaced.

The freeze stats and dampner motors in heating system in each of the main floor school classrooms need to be replaced.

The panels on the outside walls on either side of each set of classroom windows need to be caulked and painted.

New ballasts should be installed in the lights of 13 classrooms, would save energy costs. Estimate cost per classroom for the ballasts at $575.00. We can install them ourselves.

The gym floor has some asbestos in the tiles and when the tiles start to deteriorate the entire floor will need to be replaced. It is difficult to predict when this might happen. We need to monitor tiles closely for signs of wear.

Some of the hardware for the gym bleachers needs to be replaced as well as two boards. The installation and repair could be completed by parish volunteers.

The surface of the stage floor in the gym needs to be re-done or resurfaced.

The floor carpeting will need to be replaced in one school classroom next fiscal year; a room is selected in the spring based on wear.

The tile surfaces in the school hallways and bathrooms are showing wear and some peeling of paint, will need to be re-surfaced or re-painted.

Parish Center-

The basement floor tile and baseboard need to be replaced with new materials.

The carpeting in the north entrance and the steps going up to the main floor needs replacement. Recommend rubber tread material for the steps risers.

Other business-

Jim Daniel reported he filled the tent stake holes in the parking lot surface with cork material, this fall, to prevent damage from water freezing and thawing in these holes.

Richard Nuske and Dan Zierden have both indicated they are no longer able to serve on this committee for the time being.   Tim Roe also indicated that due to a new employment schedule, he will need to resign from the committee.

Meeting adjourned 7:45pm, next meeting scheduled January 19, 2006, 6:45pm., Parish Center, upper level.

Respectfully submitted,

Kyle Alexander
