Building & Grounds Committee

The Building Committee meets several times a year to oversee the maintenance of our buildings and grounds. This committee also reports to the Parish Finance Council and the Parish Pastoral Council to provide insight and guidance for planning and budgeting purposes.

Sacred Heart Church Building & Grounds Committee

Minutes of November 15, 2007, Meeting

Members Present: Jim Daniel, Randy Lorge, Roger Blumreich, Jake Yeager, Kyle Alexander

Parish Custodian: Donald Placzkowski,

Business Administrator: Penny Demerath

Meeting convened at 5:31pm.

Minutes of the October 18, 2007, meeting were reviewed and accepted.

Yeager Construction will begin building the new dividing wall and closet in the eastern storage room of the Gathering Space basement after Thanksgiving.

The tree along the north wall of Sacred Heart School has been removed and also the tree along the west side of the Parish Center has been trimmed.

Three estimates have been obtained for alarm security systems for the north school entrance and the Sawyer street entrance to the Parish Center, they are being reviewed.

Gordon Zachow, Zachow Plumbing, will be installing a new RP valve in the baptismal font water circulation system, soon.

Our annual walk thru of Parish buildings and grounds was conducted lead by Donald Placzkowski and Penny Demerath, to identify potential maintenance needs.

The following list of items needing maintenance work was developed:

Church-

The west end church ceiling fan needs to be installed.

The circulating pump for the gym air circulation system is slowly wearing out, may need to be replaced.

The risers and treads for the 5 lower steps in the stairway to the church basement at the northeast entrance need to be replaced.

Cracks in paint on the south wall the church sanctuary should be checked when Umland comes to paint the west end basement stairways.

The limestone around the west entrance door needs to be cleaned and re- sealed, this can be done by Parish volunteers.

Some floor tile is coming loose in the entrance room by the west church door.

After the west end basement stairways are painted will need to replace baseboard.

Several church pews are stored in the basement which were removed, when the baptismal font was installed. They should be used to replace soiled or damaged pews in the church and the remaining ones sold to make more room in the basement storage area.

A dampner motor in the ceiling of the basement that is part of the heating system needs to be replaced.

A leak in the cooling system for the kitchen cooler and freezer needs to be fixed.

The seal around the cover for the sewage pump in a basement storage room needs to be replaced.

The committee discussed possible options for updating the storage area for school lunch program, canned and dry goods. Penny will discuss this further with the school principal.

A dampner should be considered for installation in the fresh air ventilation system for the boiler room.

Sacred Heart School -

Two large windows next to the door at the north school entrance have condensation developing in between the glass panes, need to consider replacement. Also the three windows around the southeast school entrance door have a similar problem and could be replaced.

The freeze stats and dampner motors in the main floor school classrooms need to be replaced.

The floor carpeting in one school classroom and the library should be replaced.

The tile surfaces in some areas of the school hallways and the west school bathrooms are showing wear and peeling, will need to re-paint.

The lamps in the gym ceiling lights need to be replaced.

The panels on the outside walls on either side of each set of classroom windows need to be caulked and painted.

The surface of the stage floor in the gym needs to be re-done or resurfaced.

Parish Center-

Walls of the upper level hallways and rooms could be painted.

May need to replace expansion water tank.

Garage door is getting old and worn, may need to replace it, consider an insulated door.

Need to check roof on south end as evidence of leaking was noticed in the ceiling tile of southeast conference room.

Need to check air conditioning stack in the ceiling of a north end, upper level room, that appears to have dropped somewhat.

Parish Rectory-

Bathroom counter top could be replaced.

Deck boards need to be cleaned and re-sealed.

Grounds-

Grass along the south wall of the church is difficult to keep alive, too dry in the summer months, need to consider other options for landscaping this area.

Lawn mower is very old, may need to consider replacement.

Parking lot surface should be sealed to maintain in good condition, would then need to repaint parking lines.

Committee recommends the new sign for announcements on the west side of the church be taken to Dearco, Shawano, to obtain ideas and cost estimates to make it more secure.

Long term need to consider a more permanent sign that matches outside church décor, could replace the old masonry sign with something newer.

Need to paint the two basketball standards along the south school wall, could be a project for our parish youth.

Meeting adjourned 7:30pm. Next meeting scheduled for December 20, 2007, 6:45pm, Parish Center.

Respectfully submitted,

Kyle Alexander
