Youth Ministry

Sacred Heart Youth Ministry Planning Team Minutes

Monday, October 8, 2007

Attendance:

Cindy Swiecichowski                             Todd Raether

Mark Fuller                                           Tonya Myerchin

Shandel Huffman                                   Alex Isaacson

Amy Koehler

Items of Discussion:

Amy gave out “pink slips” for religious certification education credit for out attendance at the VITAL Youth Ministry trainings.    It would be good to keep these in an ongoing file for continuing education.

Amy shared that she is in need of assistance for this weekend’s Youth Ministry Fall Harvest Sale, which involves set-up and clean-up of the sale of baked goods and pumpkins.   Amy asked that those who can help to let her know of their interest.

There may be a Youth Ministry work day (Nov. 10 is possible date) next month for the purpose of further cleaning and painting of one of the rooms that will be used for the youth ministry at the parish center.

Amy shared that she has begun to pray at the Shawano High School, in the library, with  interested students Tuesday mornings before school.

A prayer and reflection was led by Amy on autumn.

The main work of this meeting was to start to draft our own mission statement for youth ministry at Sacred Heart parish.   This process has taken some time but slowly ideas began to be generated and discussion became livelier tonight as the group wrestled with the purpose and end result of youth ministry and began to articulate these thoughts to paper.   Below is the fruit of our labor, hopefully inspired by the Holy Spirit, for further reflection and prayer.    This is only a first draft…..

Reaching   out to youth as a community of believers,  creating a space where youth feel welcomed, valued, and respected; we will foster a deeper faith in Christ Jesus and develop a spirit of service to others.

Further discussion was on the use of “gathering,   seeking”- dropping term “community of believers;”   including the terms of  fellowship, journey.

Action Items:

Keep praying and discerning mission statement.

Let Amy know if you can assist with the fall harvest bake sale this weekend.

Look at your schedules to see if you can schedule some 1:1 time with Amy before the year is out.

Next Meeting:

Thursday, October 25, 2007 at the Parish Center- 6:30 PM

 Next VITAL:

Saturday, November 17 at Rock Garden Conference Center, Green Bay.

Arrive by 8:15am and end by 3pm.

Respectfully submitted by,

Sacred Heart Youth Ministry Planning Team Minutes

Thursday, October 25, 2007

In Attendance:

Amy Koehler, Shandel Huffman, Mark Fuller, Todd Raether, Tonya Myerchin, Alex Isaacson, Cindy Swiecichowski

Items of Discussion:

  • Amy indicated a need for drivers to take students to attend the Net Team Retreat being held in Clintonville on Friday, November 9th. Plan on leaving Sacred Heart parking lot at 3:30 and returning approximately by 8:30.   Let Amy know as soon as possible.
  • Spent time in faith sharing among each other.
  • Amy led us in prayer.
  • Majority of time was spent reworking our first draft of the Youth Ministry mission statement. The following is the result of our evening discussions:

A community of believers reaching out to young people, supporting each other on a journey to a deeper faith and life in Jesus Christ.

  • At this point, Amy indicated that we needed to challenge our mission statement with the following challenge questions.   Below is the beginning of this process.
  • Question # 1. Does the statement inspire you to action? How so? Our response was, yes, as Todd felt this was a good description of his own experience with young people. Shandel can imagine sharing this with young people, showing them we are here for a good reason. It’s exciting to get the young people to the “Aha” moment – where they are discovering something new, a change. The statement makes you feel wanted, that the youth ministry will be there for you.
  • Question # 2. Do you believe this statement reflects what the Holy Spirit desires for the youth of our community? Why?  Yes, because he wants us to be proud of others and sharing with others. We’re supporting with each other. It is time that we have this type of young people supported. Then in turn, the young people will support the community. Our parish needs young people to help our church.
  • Question # 3. Does this statement reflect the overall mission of the Church? How so?  Yes.   The service to the church was missing, so we added this element to the statement.
  • Questions # 4. Does this statement reflect the mission, personality, and unique charisms of our parish? How so?  Yes, through this group we strive to add in helping to create more uniqueness within our parish thus fulfilling the parish mission.

Closed in prayer.

Action Items:

Continue to pray and discern toward the successful completion of our mission statement.

Let Amy know if you will be carpooling to VITAL by Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007.

Next Meeting:

Saturday, November 17 VITAL at Rock Garden Conference Center, Green Bay, 8:30 to 3:00.

**Homework:   Be sure to read chapters 8 and 9 in Growing Teen Disciples.   Also, on p. 55 in your binder, you need to decide if you are a Paul or Timothy when you think of your faith journey.   On p. 56 take time to reflect on how God has worked in your life.   Please take enough time to do this well.   Pray that God reveals himself to you in your thoughts about how He worked in your life in the past.   Someday you may share your faith story with teens.   What is your story?   If you’re having trouble, you could draw it out and it may look like valleys and mountains.   However you go about it, it is your story!

Upcoming Meetings:

Monday, November 19 Meeting with Frank 6:30 at Parish Center

Monday, December 3 Meeting at Amy’s place 6:30

Monday, December 17 Christmas party at Parish Center 6:30 – All ministry

Respectfully submitted,

Cindy Swiecichowski
