Faith Formation Program
of
Sacred Heart Parish in Shawano.
Our Adult programming right now is in a fledgling state but we hope to add to it as we move through the year. Currently, we have a twelve week course which is scheduled to begin September 24th. This course will be based on the new US Catholic Catechism for Adults. It will be on Tuesday mornings from 9:00 to 11:30. For further details pick up a brochure on the table in the Gathering Space.
1. The Gospel of Women: In Luke women have a role that puts them on par with their male counterparts. Luke like to parallel two individuals, a man and a woman, in certain episodes; Mary and Zachariah in the Annunciation sequence (Lk. 1:5-38); Anna and Simeon at the presentation (Lk. 2:22-38); The man with the lost sheep and the woman with the lost coin (Lk. 15:1-1-10).
2. The Gospel of the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit receives more recognition from Luke than from any of the other evangelists. An example would be Jesus' presentation (Lk. 2:22-38). If anything, the Holy Spirit
Mark's Gospel
On December 2nd, 2007 we will begin a new liturgical year. We will begin the three year cycle once more. In Year A we focus on the Gospel of Mark who is considered the earliest of the Gospel writers. At least his gospel was the first one finished.
Mark's Jesus is a man in a hurry. Before the first chapter ends Jesus has called his first disciple, preformed his first cure, and set off for Capernaum.
Mark's Jesus is also one who is easy to relate to, a Jesus constantly hemmed in by crowds."The whole town was gathered at the door" (Mk. 1:32-33) The word "crowd"

ELEMENTARY
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Grades K through 4

The elementary
program provides students with the basic concepts of our Catholic Faith.
1st Grade:
Students begin by learning that God loves them.
2nd Grade:
Experience the loving forgiveness of God in Reconciliation.
3rd Grade:
Prepare to receive Jesus for the first time and begin to focus on the Mass.
4th Grade:
Focuses on a deeper understanding of how we are called to live based on the
sacraments and the beatitudes
MIDDLE SCHOOL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Grades 5 - 6 - 7-
8
Wednesdays 7:00 - 8:30
5th Grade: Studies the seven Sacraments centering on sacred signs as well as celebrations. We have developed a sacrament night for all of the 5th graders and their parents.
Grade 6 - Old
Testament:
From the study of Hebrew Scripture we find the roots of our Catholic Faith The
sixth grade participates in a Seder meal during lent.
Grade 7 - Jesus:
We learn to build a closer relationship with Jesus by studying both His
divinity and His humanity and seeking to answer the question:
"Who do
you say that I am?"
The seventh grade also presents the living stations during
lent.
Grade 8 -
Morality/Church History:
We begin to understand our responsibility for the choices we make and the moral
implications of those choices in relationship to the teachings of the church.
To understand church we need to know who we are as church. We also spend one
day on retreat with all students of our parish.
As a part of the
religious education program, students in grades second through eighth are provided with the
opportunity to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation during the seasons of
Advent and Lent.
HIGH
SCHOOL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

High School
students are offered a credit and choice program of religious education.
Courses are offered throughout the school year. Each course is 3 weeks in
length. Students must complete 3 courses (2 required and 1 elective) each of
the 2 years. Six credits are received for each completed course. A total of 36
credits is required before the student may begin confirmation
preparation.

Deciding as a Christian Living in today's culture is a real challenge to a sincere Christian. Our media constantly exposes us to many conflicting values. Deciding the true path to union with God can sometimes be confusing. What criteria can be used to follow the way of Jesus?
The miracle stories were used as vehicles to proclaim how the early Christian Community viewed Jesus. How do modern Biblical scholars view these extraordinary events? Jesus challenged His own culture and many of its' underlying assumptions. How parables were one of the provocative ways in which Jesus did that? |
9th Grade

1) Liturgy & Prayer Getting in touch with ourselves and our world can help us get in touch with God. Explore different styles of prayer and the meaning hidden behind symbol and ritual. Paul was a dynamic figure who led a turbulent life while preaching the Gospel to the early Gentile converts. A brillant scholark, he authored 13 of the letters in the New Testament. Who was he as a person and what was his message? |

10th grade
Required Courses are:

1) Old Testament/Hebrew Scriptures The Old Testaments tells of God choosing a people to be particularly His own. How did they respond to this invitation? Each of us today is called to belong to God's people of the New Covenant. How do we respond?.
All societies have rituals that mark and interpret important moments in life. For Catholics, these are the sacraments. How does one make the most of these opportunities to grow in closer relationship with God? How can participation in them become more meaningful?

1) World Religions All religions answer deep cries within the human person. How does each of the major religions respond to these cries? How do the key beliefs and rituals vary among different religions? How can we come to a deeper understanding of our brothers and sisters around the world?
What is the true signs of love? What qualities should one look for in a marriage partner? How does a strong relationship with God increase the stability of a marriage? |
PREPARATION
FOR CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS
First
Eucharist
First
Eucharist preparation begins in the 3rd grade and will be celebrated in the
spring of the year. Our Eucharist program is a partnership between student and
family which focuses on our celebration of the liturgy in which the Eucharist
is the central core.
First
Reconciliation
Preparation usually begins at the 2nd grade level. Students learn of the loving
forgiveness of our God and how sin affects our relationship with God and with
others as they prepare to celebrate individual Reconciliation for the first
time.
Confirmation
The
Sacrament of Confirmation is
celebrated in the fall of
the candidate's Senior year of high school.
Candidates must have attended two previous years of Religious Education (36
credits) or the equivalent and express the desire to be confirmed. Attendance
at monthly meetings, a retreat experience and church/community service hours
are also required.
